Amazon faces a lot of heat from Indians on social media websites such as Twitter where #BoycottAmazon is currently trending. It is evident that the reason for such an immense public anguish is the use of Hindu religion symbols on products such as toilet mats and doormats sold on Amazon.com website.
Users have shared the pictures of such products along with Amazon website links to express their anger.
In an independent research, we found the following controversial products still listed on Amazon.com:
Why are Indians so offended?
For Hindus, their Gods including Ganesha, Vishnu, Shiva, Krishna, Durga and others; scriptures such as Vedas, Puranas, Shastras and books, saints such as Jagadgurus, Guru Nanak, Kabir, Tulsidas and Meerabai, religious places such as Haridwar and Vrindavan are very sacred. They consider the use of these in mats, carpets or rugs as an insult to their culture and faith.
What should Amazon be doing?
- Amazon must first of all apologize to Indians/Hindus for hurting their religious sentiments.
- All these products should be immediately taken down.
- Amazon should include this feedback as a strict policy for its future sellers.
