Dubai Is Set to Fly the World’s First Passenger-Carrying Drone

Gone are the days when drones were widely used for counter-terrorism activities or at wars, nowadays, Drones have emerged out as the most innovative mode of transport for people in the middle East. Dubai is set to become the first region to in the world to approve passenger-carrying drone flying over the space. It will be for the first time that drones will be put to such use. Until now, Drones were mainly used for counter-terrorism and surveillance purposes.

In fact, it will work just like a normal airplane for shorter distances. The recent AP report claimed that the Dubai Roads and Transportation Agency is ready to experiment the single-person quadcopter which could be capable of carrying a passenger from one place to another. The Chinese drone-making company 184 Ehang has manufactured the device.

During the last World Government Summit, Dubai government official said this vehicle will be fully capable to fly safely in the open air. Interestingly, it will be for the first time that a drone will carry a passenger inside it. However, some more intricate issues like shared airspace, managing the device’s taking off and landing and whether it will fly automatically or will it have a pilot for passenger’s safety are need to be carefully examined before any final decision is taken.

Many residents of Dubai feel that it will definitely take some time before the dream of Drone-carrying passengers becomes real. The authorities are saying that by July every process would be completed to facilitate the first ever drone air transport.

This quadcopter looks little different than a normal air vehicle. It is egg-shaped having four legs and a mechanized look. The carrying capacity of the vehicle is up to 200 pounds plus a suitcase around 20 kg. Also, the vehicle will have a touch-screen pad that will operate automatically. The battery backup will be around 30-40 minutes and can cover up to 31 miles. The speed of the vehicle is expected to stay somewhere around 60 to 100 mph.

According to the Dubai’s Road and Transportation Agency, “the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority has examined the quadcopter for quality assurance purposes. It will operate through HSPA+ or 4G mobile network to give direction of its movement on sky and where it will move – the ATC will keep a constant tab on the every move of the drone to avert any sort of accident or mishap. This innovative step will give further impetus to Dubai’s dream of driverless vehicles across its streets. Dubai aims to have at least 25 per cent of its passengers commute via driverless vehicles by 2030.

Humans Won’t Survive another 1000 Years on Earth: Stephen Hawking

Humans Won’t Survive another 1000 Years on Earth: Stephen Hawking

Celebrated Scientist Stephen Hawking has doubted about the possibility of the human survival on earth in the next 1000 years. In his latest speech at Oxford Union a few months back, Professor Hawking stressed on the importance of life exploration on other planets since the resources of the earth are getting exhausted at an alarming rate. In his own words, the famous physicist said, “I don’t think we will survive another 1,000 years without escaping beyond our fragile planet.”

Considering the way non-renewable resources are being used up by human beings each passing day, a situation might come in future when all fossil fuel from the earth would get completely depleted. So, whatever Stephen Hawking mentioned in his latest Oxford event should be understood in its proper perspective.

The visionary scientist who wrote in the afterword section of a new book “How to Make a Spaceship: A Band of Renegades, an Epic Race, and the Birth of Private Spaceflight” authored by journalist Julian Guthrie predicted that “I believe that life on earth is at an ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by possible disasters, such as a sudden nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus, or other dangers. I think the human race has no future if it doesn’t go to space.”

Stephen Hawking Gave a Deadline to Human’s Possible Extinction

Stephen Hawking, in fact, stunned the world when he categorically said that humans have just a 1000-year to find a new home in an outer space possibly in the form of a planet or exoplanet. No doubt, Stephen Hawking’s theory also gets more backing from the fact that NASA has already started exploring life in other planets and exoplanets too like the Trappist-1.

During his hour-long speech at the recent Oxford Union in November last year, Stephen Hawking asked scientists to focus more on the possibility of a life there. Hawking has also reservations about the technological innovations including the ultra-sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (AI) mechanics that is crucial to his own communication process. But Hawking suspected that development of full AI could virtually bring an end to human generation.

Hawking felt that earth’s catastrophe would be prompted by human’s urge towards using more earth’s limited resources which could virtually destroy the planet in its totality.

“We face a number of threats to our survival from nuclear war, catastrophic global warming, and genetically engineered viruses. The number is likely to increase in the future, with the development of new technologies, and new ways things can go wrong. Although the chance of a disaster to planet earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time,” Hawking said in November speech at Oxford.

According to Stephen Hawking, the rising threat of AI, climate change and nuclear terrorism is largely looming before the world as a whole in the next century. Hawking gave a deadline of 1000 years for humans to find another planet for survival before earth gets destructed and virtually mass extinction occurs.

NASA Discovers TRAPPIST-1, a System of 7 Earth-Like Exoplanets

NASA Discovers TRAPPIST-1, a System of 7 Earth-Like Exoplanets

In its latest press conference, NASA took the entire world by surprise when the American premier space agency announced the discovery of seven earth-like planets, Trappist-1. It basically represents a system where seven planets almost the size of the planet Earth are located just outside the solar system. These planets are also called Exoplanets.

NASA astronauts have confirmed that these planets are rocky in nature with close proximity to stars. The scientists have discovered TRAPPIST-1 (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope) are red dwarf having cooler atmosphere inside.

The TRAPPIST-1 is a series of 7 earth-sized exoplanets. All seven of the TRAPPIST-1 planetary orbits are closer to their host star. The system is located some 40-light years (235 trillion miles) away from Earth. These 7 planetary bodies are called exoplanets because of their location outside our solar system. TRAPPIST-1 planets are rocky with mountainous terrains. Scientists are now probing if there is a possibility of the presence of water or any other liquid inside TRAPPIST-1.

NASA is now set to launch its new Webb telescope next year, scientists are even more eager to use a specialized instrument for the purpose of detecting the chemical elements like water, oxygen, ozone and other substance from these exoplanets.

“The seven wonders of TRAPPIST-1 are the first Earth-size planets that have been found orbiting this kind of star,” said Michael Gillon, principal investigator at the University of Liege, Belgium.

It is for the first time the scientists have successfully found seven planets having similar structures and characteristics almost similar to earth. Surprisingly, scientists are having firm believe in the existence of water and life in these planets. However, no confirmation has come out as yet.

According to Sarah Ballard, an MIT researcher, “If one of these planets hosts life and the adjacent one doesn’t, why not?” stated Sarah Ballard. Exactly the same goes with Earth and Venus. While, Earth support life, its nearest planet Venus doesn’t.

However, it’s still too early to say whether all these exoplanets would support life. Actually, some of them release off as much UV rays that the Sun does. And this clearly means that it won’t support the life of any form. The temperature at these exoplanets is expected to be somewhere around 0 to 100 degree Celsius.

Amaury Triaud, a scientist at the University of Cambridge said, “We have made a crucial step towards finding life out there. Up to now, I don’t think we have had the right planets to find out. Now we have the right target.”

Interestingly, this discovery made it evident that the Milky Way might be a home to tens of billions of worlds. The invention of Trappist-1 and its further research will shed more light on it which the scientists until now were completely unaware of.

Are Zombies Real?

Are Zombies Real?

One of the most mysterious urban legends of our time, Zombie has once again started creating a lot of buzz inside the world of science and politics as well. Recently, some of the US’s politicians (most from the Illinois) have cautioned citizens and law enforcement agencies to take their Zombie preparedness ability more seriously.

Last year, the month of October was marked as the “Zombie Preparedness Month.” Reportedly, it is being said that intelligence inputs might have got some inputs that prompted the state authorities to raise awareness of the people about Zombies. The Illinois state assembly put forward a house resolution (HR 0030) that asked people of Illinois to stay well prepared for Zombies; by doing so they can be in a better position to handle nature’s fury and other disasters as well.

The resolution was approved by the house a few days back. The bill also exposed America’s preparedness towards combating nature’s fury. Few states even lack the modus operandi to distribute food, water and medicine supply to affected people during a natural disaster

The debate was actually regarding America’s capacity to fight nature’s wrath but Rep. Steven Anderson, R-Geneva, made the conversation more interesting by raising the question that which type of Zombie to be used for natural disaster preparedness? He argued that Zombies portrayed on “Z Nation” are faster but those on “The Walking Dead” are more organised.

Scientific Evidence to Zombie’s Existence

Believe it or not, Zombies are real! Science is notorious for doing things that we couldn’t even dream of. Dr Wade Davis, a well known scientist, has learned the “art of making Zombie” using mysterious Zombie juice  and toad skin. He learnt the art from a Vodoo practitioner in Haiti.

1) Zombies are created by Vodoo priests belonging to Bizango secret societies.

2) Zombification or creating someone a Zombie is an ultimate form of punishment to a culprit or convict under Bizango societies.

In his book, “Passage of Darkness (1988)”, the scientist claimed to have found the reality of Zombies. He concluded that by putting on toad skin all over the body and consuming a poisonous substance, the person goes insane and stays in an inebriated state for a long time – mostly for life long time.

 What Does a Zombie Do?

They mystery of Zombies has always made people curious. Zombie basically denotes a dead man having an ability to walk in an eerie manner. They suck blood from humans. The English word “Zombie” first came to use in 1819 when the Brazilian poet Robert Southey mentioned the term Zombi in his literary work.

Zombie is largely categorized as a work of fiction with no existence of its own. They eat raw meat of humans and animals. According to the Haitian folklore, whoever commits suicide – never gets salvation. Their souls could neither enter a new human body nor could it escape from the world. They continue to stay in a half-human and half-dead state forever!

Earth Finds its 8th Continent in Zealandia: Say Scientists

Until now, the earth has seven continents; Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America and North America. But the latest news confirmed that scientists have now unveiled the latest mystery surrounding the eighth continent Zealandia.

Researchers have now argued that New Caledonia and New Zealand are not just an island chain, but a gigantic part of 5-million-square kilometer slab of continental crust (excluding Australia) – submerged under water.

Prominent geologist Luyendyk discovered the term Zealandia for the newly-discovered continent as early as 1995 because of its closer proximity to New Zealand region. It covers the regions of New Zealand, New Caledonia and a collection of crust that broke off from the ancient Gondwana region. According to an estimate, around 95 per cent of Zealandia is currently submerged underwater in the Southwest Pacific Ocean.

Criteria for a Land to Constitute as a Continent

  • Land that is high from the sea floor.
  • The presence of three types of rocks; Igneous, Metamorphic and sedimentary. Igneous rocks are formed out of volcanic eruption, metamorphic rocks are formed due to intense heat and pressure, and sedimentary rocks come to form out of erosion.
  • Thicker crust surrounding the sea floor.
  • Having a considerable size of an area.

Eventually, Luyedyk came to conclusion with the term Zealandia for the area that is expected to be continental with a collection of micro continents. The recent study suggests that Zealandia is a part of a unified region. The area is estimated to be even bigger than India. More research into the subject is still awaited.

Some More Interesting Facts about Zealandia

Zealandia consists of two plates; the Pacific plate and the Australian Plate. “I’m from California, and it has a plate boundary going through it. In millions of years, the western part will be up near Alaska. Does that make it not part of North America? No,” said Luyendyk.

Today, only five percent of the Zealandia land is visible. The process of classifying Zealandia as a continent could take a few more years after due observation by the geoscientists.

The country that will be hot topic among scientist is New Zealand. As it is still to be determined that what part of New Zealand will constitute Zealandia and what part will continue to be counted as a territory of New Zealand – the nation?

Zealandia covers parts of Norfolk Island, the Lord Howe Island group, New Zealand and Middleton reefs. It is believed that Zealandia broke away from Gondwana some 80 million years back. Over the last two decades, geologists worldwide are trying to include Zealandia as an independent and well-recognised Continent. If their proposal is approved, Zealandia is set to become the world’s eighth and smallest continent.

Experiential Tourism is Picking Up in India: SATTE 2017

After a spectacular opening on Day 1, SATTE 2017 begins on day 2 with the same enthusiastic audience. I made it on time for this event today, with a new pair of formal shoes, and a better planning strategy. The first panel discussion taking place today is on niche and experiential tourism.

satte

Here are the key takeaways:

  • Experiential travel is a multi billion dollar market. In US alone there are 67000 businesses in the experiential travel sector.
  • Cruise wedding is emerging as a new trend in India.
  • Tourism has grown in Kerala due to traditional ayurveda
  • Innovative tourism practices such as floating cottages have been successful in attracting tourists at locations such as Kerala.
  • There is a need to push the inclusion of Ayurvedic treatments in travel insurance plans to promote Ayurvedic medication on a global scale.
  • Service acts as the key differentiation for travel sector propositions.
  • Indian tourism needs to be promoted often, and on a larger scale for better inbound tourism.

That’s all I have in store for today.

SATTE 2017 is a great platform for B2B marketing, and I highly recommend that travel operators must attend this event for optimum business leads and  collaborations.

SATTE 2017 Begins in Delhi

No automatic alt text available.

SATTE, which is a renowned South Asian travel show began today at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. Tourism and travel operators from different parts of the world are participating in the 3 day long travel conference. The conference started on an initial discussion on sustainable tourism. Unfortunately, I missed this address. Why? Because I had fallen due to high heels on the road on my way to the conference. With major cab operators such as Uber and Ola on strike, I had limited options – take a metro or an auto. I decided to hire an auto. The reason was simple. I wanted to avoid climbing staircase with high heels, and then the hassle of boarding a metro. I managed to reach the exhibition area at 11:30 am. But an entire hour was lost in trying to locate a first aid booth in the conference. Right from exhibition desk to the ambulance outside Hall No. 11, everyone guided me with directions for a first aid booth. But sadly, I did not get any first aid. Fortunately, my wounds are not large enough, and I could manage without a first aid. God forbid, if someone has a serious emergency, what will happen? I expected the ambulance team to at least be loaded with medicines and expertise to assist me with my wounds. Such an experience highlights the lacunae in emergency and disaster management that still exist in such events organized in India.

I then headed to Hall 8 where a panel discussion on “Make in India and Tourism” was taking place. The discussion began with the evolution of tourism in India and the key pillars that form the basis of tourism. I am sharing some valuable insights from the session here.

  • India’s share in the global tourism sector is less than 1%. India’s domestic tourism sector on the other hand is comparatively stronger with billions of tourists that form its base.
  • In order to push growth in tourism sector, a radical shift is needed to create new demand through measures such as mega-tourism zones. GST also holds importance for Indian tourism sector.
  • The sector recommends direct tax incentives to holiday in India.
  • Tourism has not been defined in Indian constitution and it is recommended that this is done.
  • 80% of the tourism takes place within 3 hours distance from India.
  • If holiday in India is taken forward as s strategy, tourism sector contribution to Indian economy will be 4.5% (currently at 2%) and its employment rate will be 11% (currently 5%).
  • It is interesting to know that first ever tourism conference was held in Kashmir in India. Kashmir has been experimenting with various technologies to push tourism in the state. Tulip gardens of Kashmir have also been instrumental in promoting tourism in the region. There is revival of Bollywood movie production in Kashmir which is likely to promote tourism of the state. The state invites regional as well as international movie makers to promote the region.
  • Gir National Park is an attractive tourist destination for Gujarat and India, with the population of Asiatic Lions being rejuvenated in the wild life sanctuary adding special relevance to the place. Saurashtra region and its people need special mention to thank them for their efforts in conserving wildlife in the region. Migratory bird lovers must visit Saurashtra to observe nature at its best.
  • There is a need to create new tourist destinations to promote India as a tourist destination.

I will continue updating this blog post and post several others, while I cover the three day event.
