  • Princeton University Scientists have developed a rice-grain-sized laser passing through artificial atoms also called quantum dots. So, quantum computer is relevant to semiconductor materials too.
  • Intel is also proactively developing quantum chips to make sure that future quantum computers work efficaciously through these chips. It has incorporated its spin qubits on its 300 mm process technology.

Some Salient Points About Quantum Computers

  • These equipments will be highly sensitive to outer atmosphere.
  • Quantum computers will have to be kept in rooms where temperature is zero.
  • Standard consumption of electricity by a quantum computer to cool down will be around 10 to 15 Kws of power.
  • The main challenge is to integrate more and more qubits to silicon chips. Qubits enhance the amount of heat radiation that such computers will emit, but these qubits are necessary let the system work well.

Bees might have little brains, but that are capable enough to do lots of things. They are far more intelligent than what humans assumed them to be. The latest research conducted at Queen Mary University, London, showed that Bees are quick learners and learn from the things around the environment. Then they disseminate the message within other bees too.

According to Loukola, one of the researchers on the subject, “I think the most important result in our case was that bumblebees can not just copy others but they can improve upon what they are learning. This is of course amazing for small-brained insects — even for us, it’s difficult to improve on something when we are copying others, she added.”

The experiment conducted by the scientists was to judge whether bees would be able to move a yellow ball into the center of a platform or not. Surprisingly they did. Bees saw the ball move, and then they tried doing the same. Scientists used magnets and sugar water (reward) while carrying out this experiment. When Bees saw that some sort of reward was there, they successfully completed the assignment.

Satisfied with the result, Reese Halter, a conservation biologist explained, “Bees are highly intelligent creatures. They use their neurons in their brain as efficiently as any other animal on the globe. There’s little under a million neurons in a bee brain, which is approximately the number of neurons in one human retina.” However, Halter explained the same as an outsider – he wasn’t involved in the real research.

Bees communicate with each other through jostling, head-butting and dancing. An experiment conducted a few years back in 2009 confirmed the fact that bees are quite intelligent to trace out real flowers from the artificial ones. Earlier, scientists believed in the concept that big brains work better, but the latest research on bumble bee confirmed that even tiniest brains can work more intelligently than humans and other living beings.

In 1939, the scientific community discovered that the Germans had found the secret to split a uranium atom. This they thought would make them capable of producing a bomb with power of incredible destruction.

Enrico Fermi and Albert Einstein fled the Nazi Germany to US to escape death. They wanted to inform the President of the United States about the atomic bomb technology with the opponent Axis Powers.

Fermi and Einstein tried to press upon the necessity to start an atomic research program with the then President Roosevelt. Roosevelt agreed and in 1941 America received the sanction of the Manhattan Project.

In the end of the ear 1972, Fermi along with a group of Physicists conducted the first controlled nuclear chain reaction at the University of Chicago. Since then the Manhattan project progressed at a rapid speed. About $2 billion dollars had been spent in the development of the atomic bomb. The project had employed over 120,000 people in America and the project had to be kept a secret somehow.

Roosevelt and Churchill agreed for secrecy and decided that Stalin to be kept uninformed. There was no awareness of something of this sort being existent and thus there was no debate. Only the most important and trustworthy scientists working on the project knew about it and all the 120,000 employees were kept uninformed about the bomb.

Interestingly, Vice President Truman did not know about the project until he became President himself.

On July 16, 1945 the bomb was tested by Robert J Oppenheimer at Trinity test site in New Mexico.

Impact of the trial

During the test, clouds formed by the bomb reached 40,000 feet height.

Windows of houses over 100 miles away was broken.

The test was successful and fake news about ammunition dump being exploded in the desert was created to hide the test.

The rest is history.


Scientists Discovered Time Crystals: Latest form of Matter


In an interesting scientific development, two groups of scientists have discovered a new phase of matter called time crystals. Scientists from Harvard University and the University of Maryland have invented the first-ever time crystals. This newest form of matter will have its applications in quantum computers.

Time crystals have an atomic structure that repeats in time on periodic basis like tapping Jell-O to jiggle. The time crystals are similar to the liquid or gaseous state of ice. According to Yao (scientist) of UC Berkeley group, “time crystals are a new phase of matter, period and first example of non-equilibrium matter”. In fact, time crystals have conga line of 10 ytterbium ions whose electrons interact in a similar way how qubit systems work inside quantum computers.

The idea of time crystals was first conceived by Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek in the year 2012. This subject then again got the limelight last year when physicists at Princeton University, the US proved that such crystal can be easily made. In fact, the nano atoms within the time crystals oscillate sans energy making it one of the isolated cases of non-equilibrium matter.

When it comes to normal crystals like diamonds, these have an atomic lattice or array of atoms attached to it – that repeats in space. Time crystals have added a new dimension to the study of matter. For the last few decades together scientists have been zeroing in on equilibrium matters like insulators and metals, but with the discovery of time crystals – this trend is set to change. Now, scientists will also give enough attention to non-equilibrium matters as well.

How does Time Crystal Functions?

Scientists claimed that time crystals break time symmetry. The magnetic field created by the crystals drive ytterbium atoms producing a typical repetition in it which otherwise won’t happen.

“You have some periodic driver that has a period ‘T’, but the system somehow synchronizes so that you observe the system oscillating with a period that is larger than ‘T’”, a scientist studying time crystals explained. This research on Time Crystals was well supported by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the concerned varsities.

Time crystals resemble jelly. It jiggles on tapping but otherwise remains motionless and without energy for most of the time. It is definitely a non-equilibrium matter. This prompted Yao and his team to come out with a detailed blueprint and hypothesis that accelerated massive research oin this field by other scientists as well. Yao’s blueprint was first published in Physical Review Letters.
